Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence

Dr. Miriam E. Necesito is the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence in the School of Business and Leadership for the Spring 2009 semester.  Dr. Necesito is the Assistant Vice President for University Special Projects and Quality Assurance at Philippine Women's University and has extensive experience in the areas of quality assurance and educational assessment.  While at Dominican, she will teach Business Statistics & Research Methods and Information Technology & Operations Management in the undergraduate business program and conduct her research on best practices on empowering women leadership among Baldrige Award recipients.

Forum to Focus on Business Ethics

On Friday, February 20, the School of Business and Leadership presented How Bernie Madoff Scammed the Experts. Joseph Aaron, who as a hedge fund manager in 2003 warned investors to stay clear of Bernard Madoff, provided an overview of the history of hedge funds, explained what regulators look for when investigating allegations of securities fraud, and offered insight into how Madoff was able to fly under the regulatory radar for so many years. Aaron was joined by Dr. Harlan Stelmach, chair of Dominican’s Department of Humanities and co-author of Doing Ethics in a Diverse World, and Dr. Luis Calingo, dean of the School of Business and Leadership. Internationalizing the School

On March 29-30, 2008, the School of Business and Leadership hosted a visit of Dr. Louie Divinagracia, Director of the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Business, De La Salle University, Philippines. We discussed opportunities for collaboration in the areas of student virtual teams and education in sustainable enterprise.

Dominican was awarded grants to host two scholars from overseas under the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program during the 2008-2009 academic year. The scholars are Dr. Watana Vinitwatanakhun, Assumption University, Bangkok, Thailand, and Dr. Miriam E. Necesito, Assistant Vice President for Special Projects at Philippine Women’s University. Dr. Watana will work with the Nursing Department, School of Arts and Sciences, while Dr. Necesito will work with the School of Business and Leadership.

Center for Sustainability and Sustainable Enterprise Education

Sarah Diefendorf, Director, Environmental Finance Center, Region 9, and Green MBA student Lauralee Barbaria returned on April 24 from Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, where they spent two weeks exploring sustainable business practices in this rapidly growing mining city. The Center for Sustainability organized and received grants in support of this project.
 
Two Green MBA graduating students will travel to Capetown, South Africa for two months this summer to teach about sustainability through a grant-sponsored program under the Center for Sustainability.

Sarah Diefendorf, a founding member of the Dominican University Center for Sustainability and executive director of the Environmental Finance Center for EPA Region 9 - housed at Dominican - talks with CBS-5 (KPIX-TV) for a story about corporate responsibility and the environment.

San Francisco’s ABC-7 was on campus earlier this month interviewing John Stayton, Green MBA, for a story about businesses offering green incentives to employees. John’s commentary was included in the segment about incentives offered by several Bay Area companies, including Yahoo and Cliff Bar.

Dominican's Green MBA program gives students the tools to make widespread change, noted the Santa Rosa Press Democrat in a feature story about the popular business program.

Dominican's Green MBA was featured in an Associated Press story about the growing demand for programs that train environmentally conscious business leaders. The story was carried by more than 200 news organizations nationwide, including USA Today

KPIX television talked with Green MBA Director John Stayton and a cohort of Green MBA students and alumni for a news segment about the Dominican program. An interview with Stayton also aired on KCBS radio.

 

Institute for Leadership Studies

The Institute for Leadership Studies, under the direction of Professor Denise Lucy, continues to offer exciting leadership development programming. In spring 2008, the Leadership Lecture Series featured four women leaders. Three of the lecture events included Dominican honorary degree recipients. Featured this spring were Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State; Ann Wilson, CEO of United Way of the Bay Area; author Isabel Allende; and author Amy Tan, 2008 One Book One Marin prize winner, who was interviewed by Michael Krasny.

 

Faculty News

Dr. Asayeghn Desta, Professor of Economics, published his article, “Conventional versus Environmentally-Sensitive Wines: The Status of Wine Production Strategies in California North Coast Counties,” in the Journal of Business and Public Affairs 2 (2008).

Dr. Asayeghn Desta and Dr. Tetteh A. Kofi of the University of San Francisco, published their book, The Saga of African Underdevelopment: A Viable Approach for Africa’s Sustainable Economic Development in the 21st Century (Trenton, N.J.: Africa World Press, 2007).

Dr. Françoise O. Lepage, Dean Emerita, spoke on the subject, “Talking to Our Enemies,” at the April 7 session of Great Decisions 2008. Every year throughout the country, the Foreign Policy Association chooses eight topics of current debate Our Great Decisions classes are a collaboration between Dominican, Global Education Marin, and the Marin Chapter of the World Affairs Council.

Dr. Denise M. Lucy, Director, Institute for Leadership Studies, Dr. Jayati Ghosh, Director, Honors Program, and Dr. Edward Kujawa, Dean, School of Education, presented a paper, “Empowering Women’s Leadership: A Case Study of Bangladeshi Micro-Credit Business,” at the annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Management held in Arlington, Virginia, in April. Professors Ghosh and Lucy also chaired two sessions each at the conference.

Professor John Stayton, Director, Green MBA, was the featured speaker at North Bay Sustainable Business Alliance’s “Green Drinks: A Sustainability Networking Event” on April 24. He spoke on “How to Become a Sustainability Change Agent.” At the Sustainable Enterprise Conference held in Rohnert Park on May 2, he led a panel on “Lessons Learned in Sustainable Business.” He also spoke on Social Entrepreneurship at Union College in Schenectady, New York, on May 13.

Dominican was a Visionary Sponsor and Presenting Organization at the third annual Sustainable Enterprise Conference held at the Sonoma Mountain Village in Rohnert Park on May 2. The Sustainable Enterprise Conference, which Professor John Stayton co-founded in 2006, is specifically geared towards the needs of enterprises and intended to answer the question "We know about sustainability, so what do we do next?"

Dean Luís Calingo was appointed to the Marin County Workforce Investment Board and is involved in planning the Marin Workforce Summit on May 29. He has been invited to be a member of the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and underwent the examiner preparation course in Washington, DC, in May in preparation for his appointment to the Board. He continues to serve on the academic advisory council of the College of Business Administration of the University of Dubai. He recently returned from Hanoi, Vietnam on an Asian Productivity Organization technical mission to help prepare Vietnamese business and government managers to serve as examiners for the Vietnam Quality Award.
