Teach With Africa

The mission of Teach with Africa is to send U.S. - trained teaching teams to South Africa in response to the dire teacher shortage and educational crisis facing that nation.  Our goal is reciprocal: to teach and to learn.  By integrating their experiences into curricula and programs after their return to the United States, these educators will enhance opportunities for children in the Bay Area and beyond to identify themselves as "global citizens" through authentic connections, ongoing dialogue and shared learning with the students in South Africa.

Founded in 2007, Teach With Africa raises funds for recruiting, deploying and supporting teaching teams to assist the LEAP School in Cape Town, which has had remarkable success in educating the most economically/socially challenged students.  Dominican University of California began its partnership with Teach with Africa in 2007, sending our first group of credentialed teachers, mental health professionals, and MBAs focused on social entrepreneurship and sustainability to Cape Town in 2008.

"It is with sadness and excitement that we start to say goodbye.  The sadness is the energy, teamwork, and commitment that leave us in the short term, but the excitement is that the projects and ideas that have been generated remain with us, and present all kinds of opportunities as we move forward."

- John Gilmour, founder of the LEAP school (about the end of the 2008 summer fellowship)
