Back to my Nor Cal home!
Leighia-Sunday, October 12th,2008- This is my first blog ever and first year as an Ambassador, so I am so excited to write this bog and share my life at DU with you. Summer in SoCal was much needed and enjoyable. I had many trips, but eventually it was over and school began. Soccer, 17 units, Student- Teaching, ASDU, BSU, Ambassadors, along, with studying, shopping, and parties is what my life consist of. I hope you enjoy it as much as i do! So I am back to my Nor Cal home ( Dominican)!
It is already October and I feel like summer just ended. Since this is my first blog EVER I thought I would give you some 411 on my life thus far at Dominican. Well I am a just turned 19 year old sophomore. I am on the DU womens soccer team which is the most amazing experience ever. I also am on ASDU, where I work with some amazing people. My job is to host fun events for the students to enjoy! Also, I am the VP of BSU (Black Student Union).I also work as an Ambassador which is absolutely the best job I’ve ever had. Even though, I may seem like I am the busiest person ever, I love to have fun. I enjoy spending time with my roommate making up songs and shopping, I love to play Wii Sports Boxing and tennis, in my free time I shop, talk on the phone, and pick out outfits to wear in the future, and dance!
Now that you know enough about me, let’s get started. Like I said early summer was way too short, but it was filled with many memories. This summer I went to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador with the Biology Dept. and boy that was a trip to remember. I had the opportunity to swim with SHARKS, yes sharks. I also got to climb a volcano that was absolutely beautiful. In June, Dominican sent me to Illinois, for the LeaderShape Conference. At this conference there were other 50 Universities represented. At LeaderShape they helped me to improve my leadership skills and create a vision. My best friends and I also took a road trip to VEGAS. This road trip was filled with many laughs and great memories. Soon after the family and I took a relaxing get away to in Big Bear Mountains to bring the summer to an end.
Although, summer was filled with great trips, summer school, work, family time and partying it was time to get back to Nor Cal! I had spent 2 months away from some of my closest friends and I was missing the life of a busy college student. Finally, I arrived to an empty Dominican campus after driving 6 long hours. EMPTY yes, because the their were only about 40 soccer players here preparing for an intense two weeks of double days. And when I say intense I mean it. We had to wake up at 530 am run about 6 miles then return to the field at 2pm do fitness, and technique, then wake up and do it all again. Even though, there was a lot of pain, tears, and heartache over those 2 weeks it paid off because we are currently 5-0-1!
With soccer going well so is everything else. I have 17 units this semester including student-teaching on Thursdays and Friday at a local elementary school. Midterms are already here, but I am more then prepared and anxious to get them over with. Two of my classes (Physics & Math) are rather difficult, but nothing I can’t handle. For some reason I love the challenge.
ASDU is also going great we have great group individuals who work to make a great team. We have already put on many events. My favorite being the Karaoke Social, where many people let loose and sang their hearts out, I also enjoyed our “Summer Lovin” dance, and lastly Day on the Lawn, where we played baseball girls v. boys, ate BBQ, and listened to music all day long. BSU has also had a great turnout at our Wii Social, although I didn’t win first place I did pretty well. But BSU has there biggest conference of the year coming up in November, called the National Black Student Union Conference in Lincolnshire, Illinois. At this conference over 80 universities and their clubs come to gather, share information, and get informed. Personally, I can not wait.
Pretty much, this is the jest of my life thus far at DU. I am more than excited to see my parents and little sister, who are coming up in two weeks for my dad’s birthday (Happy Birthday Dada). But that’s all for now, and I can’t wait to tell you about their visit soon!
Stay Blessed & Happy
