Dominican 2007 season recap
San Rafael, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team won their final two matches of the season against Menlo College and Bethany College to finish with a 14-9 overall record. The finished conference play with a 12-2 conference mark and as Co-Champs of the California Pacific Conference with rival Holy Names University. A tie-breaker process was necessary to determine who earned the conference's lone automatic berth to the NAIA Region II playoffs, hosted by #1 Fresno Pacific University. The tie-breaker went to the third step to determine the Cal Pac representative.
Dominican and Holy Names split their two matches this year and had identical records against their Cal Pac opponents, cancelling out the first two tie-breaker possibilities. The third tie-breaker criteria is that of regional ranking, which was based on the November 5 poll prior to Dominican playing their final two matches against Menlo and Bethany. That poll went in Holy Names' favor because they had played Menlo and Bethany earlier in the season.
Dominican head coach Roger Goodwin said, "We're obviously disappointed with the regional outcome but I'm very proud of their accomplishments that the team made this year, especially after graduating 5 seniors/4 starters from last years team. I knew we had a lot of talent going into the season, but I wasn't sure how quickly they would develop."
Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Pecora was voted the Cal Pac Player of the Year and setter Brooke Swingle was named the Cal Pac Freshman of the Year. Both players hail from Santa Rosa and played for the Absolute Volleyball Club based in Marin.
