Innovative Program Prepares First-Generation Students for College
Sixty Marin county high school students are spending the week living and learning at Dominican University of California during the Marin Education Fund’s Summer Application Institute (SAI). The program is designed for students who will be the first in their family to attend college in the United States.
During the five-day institute, the students learn how to obtain financial assistance, complete the college application process, take part in test preparation activities, and participate in intensive writing clinics geared toward college and scholarship application essays. Students will live on campus in Meadowlands Hall, originally built in 1888 as the summer home to San Francisco’s de Young family.
Dominican and the Marin Education Fund have partnered to offer the SAI for the past eight years. This year’s is the largest ever SAI class.
To date, an impressive 98 percent of SAI’s 298 participants have either graduated from college, are enrolled in college, or plan to enroll next fall. In recent years former SAI attendees have graduated from some 100 colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Each year Dominican University of California awards one full-tuition and two half-tuition scholarships to SAI graduates. The Marin Future Promise Scholarships will be presented at the SAI's closing ceremonies on August 4.
