With an array of non-credit personal enrichment courses, OLLI at Dominican is a membership-driven community of adult learners. Anyone 50 years of age or older may join the institute.
The program offers university-based academic topics, in
addition to areas of personal interest, taught by Dominican University
instructors and other community experts. This semester’s instructors include
Jan Wahl, film critic for KRON Channel 4; Roberta Wain-Becker, founder and
general director of Golden Gate Opera; and Dr. Nahid Angha, the main
representative of the International Association of Sufism to the United
Nations.
Fall session courses range from the creative arts, such as opera, Hollywood films, and Italian Renaissance art, to the
literary arts such as Islamic mystical literature and French literature.
Students also may take courses in politics and history, including the
foundations of immigration, a study of Putin’s Russia, and an in-depth examination
of terrorism.
OLLI classes are held on Dominican’s 80-acre campus in San Rafael, as well as at the Aldersly
Garden Retirement
Center in San
Rafael, the Tamalpais in Greenbrae, the Presbyterian Church of
Novato, and the Margaret Todd Senior Center in Novato.
There are two levels of membership. Anyone interested in participating
in OLLI programs and activities pays a one-time basic annual membership fee of
$20. Basic members may then enroll in OLLI courses by paying the individual
course fees each session. Course fees vary by course length.
A premium annual membership enables members to attend any or all OLLI courses during all sessions. Premium annual membership also gives members use of the Conlan Recreation Center, free admission to all athletic events, free admission to many cultural and educational events on campus, and use of the Alemany Library.
Individual premium annual membership rates are $280 if received by
August 31. The rate is $310 after August 31. Partner annual membership rates,
which allow any two persons to join, are $500 for two if received by August 31
and $560 for two after August 31.
OLLI at Dominican is made possible by a generous grant from the
Bernard Osher Foundation. Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes are now found on
115 campuses from Maine to Hawaii.
