News Item Leadership Lecture Series Welcomes Gore, Plouffe
Former United States Vice President Al Gore, now a Nobel Peace Prize and Academy Award-winning environmental activist, headlines the Institute for Leadership Studies Fall 2009 Lecture Series at Dominican University of California. Gore's Monday evening lecture at Angelico Hall is sold out. David Plouffe, Barack Obama's presidential campaign manager, will speak at Angelico on Wednesday night, Nov. 11.

News Item Dominican gets $1 million grant for national research site
Dominican University of California has received a $989,798 grant from the 2008 Farm Bill to establish the National Ornamentals Research Site at Dominican University of California (NORS-DUC). Scientists from the national and international research community will conduct studies focused on understanding and controlling Phytophthora ramorum, the plant pathogen known to cause Sudden Oak Death (SOD) and ramorum blight on nursery stock. NORS-DUC will be the first research site in the United States dedicated to the study of diseases of ornamental plants in a simulated nursery setting.

Former San Rafael High School volleyball star Tianna Tuatagaloa has come home to play again, practically in her backyard this time. Tuatagaloa has transferred from Gonzaga University, a NCAA Division I school, to be a graduate student and play for Dominican University of California, which will begin play this fall in NCAA Div. II. The 6-foot outside hitter is practicing with her new Penguin teammates in preparation for their season-opening tournament at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park Aug. 28-29.

Now in its fifth year, the Institute has 520 students.

Dominican’s School of Business and Leadership has been accepted to membership in the Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS), the leading association of business schools in the Asia Pacific region. The School of Business and Leadership is only the second American business school to have been accepted for AAPBS membership. The other school is the University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business.

Dominican has entered into a partnership with SUPINFO International University, France’s largest accredited higher education institute of information technology. The partnership will bring about 240 students to a new Dominican University of California/SUPINFO campus in San Francisco and eventually will enable Dominican to offer select business programs to students enrolled at SUPINFO campuses overseas.

Former San Francisco Mayor the Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr., Sister Raya Hanlon, O.P. ’59, Peter Jacobi, Renée Knee, and Susan McCue ’92 have been appointed to Dominican University of California’s Board of Trustees. John R. Gaulding has been appointed Chair of the Board. Gaulding previously served as the Board’s Chairman from 1991-1994.

News Item International Temperament Experts Present Research at Dominican University of California
Leading psychologists and temperament experts from the United States and Europe discussed their research at the “17th Occasional Temperament Conference,” October 17 and 18 at Dominican. Since it began in Louisville in 1978, the Occasional Temperament Conference has been meeting roughly every other year (hence the name Occasional). The last conference was held two years ago at Brown University.

For the first time in its 117-year history Dominican University of California will observe two commencement ceremonies. The move is necessary due to the increased number of graduate and undergraduate students. Of the 422 students receiving degrees during Commencement 2007, 293 are undergraduate students and 129 are graduate students.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) begins its winter session at Dominican University of California on February 12. Residents living along the California coastline need to be better educated and better prepared in the event of a tsunami. A new study by a Dominican University of California researcher shows that many coastal residents are both unaware of the threat of tsunami and unprepared to respond to either a tsunami warning, which could potentially give residents at least one or two hours to evacuate the area, or to a strong local earthquake, which could result in tsunami waves hitting the coast in a matter of minutes.

Father Robert Haberman, director of Dominican’s Campus Ministry Office, will lead his 30th La Bamba trip to Mexico from March 9-13. Every semester, a group of 12-15 students from Dominican work at the Casa de Los Pobres, which is located in the colonia near the Tijuana dump. The House of the Poor is administered by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Peace and was co-founded by the late Father Alfred Boeddeker, founder of San Francisco’s St. Anthony Dining Hall. Students assist the Sisters by serving the more than 1,000 people who line up each day at the soup kitchen, distributing groceries and clothing, and fixing buildings. The students will also work at Mission San Rafael in nearby Colonia Esperanza, repairing houses and providing a carnival for the colonia’s children. Mission San Rafael is run by Sr. Gene McNalley, OP, a native of SanRafael and a member of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael.

Dominican University of California history instructor Gretchen Grufman and her writer/director son Cary Fukunaga are the duo behind the award-winning short feature film Victoria para Chino. The same fungus-like organism that has infected thousands of trees with Sudden Oak Death is now threatening several species of popular plants throughout the United States, forcing nursery owners to take costly measures to ensure their stock remains disease free. Dominican University of California, in collaboration with the University of San Diego, the National Park Service, and Sunnyside Nursery, has started a yearlong project to determine how to control the spread of the deadly Phytophthora ramorum among camellia plants in nurseries.

News Item Dominican Reports Record Enrollment Figures
Enrollment at Dominican University of California is the highest it has ever been in the University’s 114-year history. Total enrollment for fall 2004 is 1,977, breaking last fall’s record of 1,766. The fall 2004 figure represents a182 percent increase in enrollment in the past 10 years. The University has seen a significant increase in the number of students from throughout California, especially Southern California. Further, the University notes an increase in the number of traditional, full-time students on campus.

Dominican University of California announces the first courses offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). The OLLI provides six-to eight-week non-credit courses to the adults in our community who are 50 years or older. These courses present the chance to pursue the intellectual challenge of academic programs without the stress of grades, tests or homework.
News Item US News & World Report Names Dominican a Top School in the West
For 2005, U.S. News & World Report has named Dominican University of California as one of the top universities in the West providing a full range of undergraduate and master’s-level programs. This is the second time in three years that Dominican has been listed as a top school in the “Western Universities— Master’s” category. The University ranked 35 out of 58 in the top tier.
