Family Weekend 2019
Pepe Gonzalez ’98, principal of Laurel Dell Elementary School and past president of the Dominican Alumni Association board of directors, was the keynote speaker for Convocation 2019 to kickoff Family Weekend October 11-12.
Convocation, which celebrates the academic accomplishments of Dominican sophomores, juniors and seniors who have been named to the Dean's List in consecutive semesters, was held from 4-5 p.m. in Angelico Concert Hall. First-year Trustee Scholars were recognized and the ceremony included the presentation of the Class of 2023 Class Shield and performances by Dominican’s LINES Ballet BFA in Dance students, Student Chamber Ensemble, and the A Cappella Workshop.
Dominican President Mary Marcy delivered the welcoming address and Nicola Pitchford, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, presented the Joseph R. Fink Faculty Achievement Award to psychology professor Dr. Gail Matthews. Pacific West Conference Commissioner Bob Hogue presented the PacWest Academic Achievement Award to Dominican for the ninth time in the past 10 years.
Convocation was followed by the President's Reception outside Angelico Hall and a Penguins' women's volleyball match vs. Azusa Pacific in the Conlan Center
On Saturday, a “Welcome to the Dominican Experience” presentation in Guzman Lecture Hall featured three academic sessions.
- OT Professor Laura Greiss Hess led “Babies in the Lab! Observe. Play. Learn” in Meadowlands Hall Room 209.
- Art Professor Mathew Garcia led “Artist's Lens: How Photography Shapes Us” in San Marco Room 1.
- History Professor Jordan Lieser led “To The Archives! Constructing History in 45 Minutes” in Room 133 of the Science Center.
Students and their families attended a barbecue luncheon at Caleruega Dining Hall and/or toured the Campus Bookstore in Fanjeaux Hall and ASDU's Fall Festival on the Alemany Library lawn.
Family Weekend 2019 concluded with Penguins’ women’s and men's soccer matches vs. Biola University on Kennelly Field, a Campus Ministry Moonlight Hike along the Tennessee Valley Trail in Mill Valley, and a Penguins’ women's volleyball match vs. Point Loma in the Conlan Center.
