Depending on whether you are just starting or you are continuing and your major, academic advising varies. Please use the following as guidelines:
Academic Advising in the First Year
(new and transfer students)
After you have committed to attending Dominican, you will be connected with an advisor. Some of the advisors are in the Student Success Center (SSC) and some are in the program you have selected. All of them want your college experiences to be positive, successful and transformational. During your first advising session, you can expect to:
- Select courses and learn how to enroll
- Learn more about what the University has to offer you
- Ask questions about what to expect
The Advising Period and Priority Registration
(continuing students)
The advising period is scheduled for one month prior to the date when registration becomes available. During this period, it is important that you meet with your academic advisor in order to monitor your progress toward degree, discuss any possible changes, and select classes for the following semester. This is a great opportunity to:
- Discuss possible changes to your degree plan such as adding/changing majors and or minors
- Ensure that you are on the pathway to graduate on time and have met all requirements
- Learn about electives, co-curricular opportunities, and possible internships
The week following the advising period is called “priority registration”. This is when registration for continuing students becomes available. The Registrar’s Office will communicate what date registration opens for various groups of students, so you know when you are able to enroll in classes.
